I arrived in Phnom Penh on Sunday. My flight was an hour and a half late getting in and my cab driver got very lost on my way to the dorm. One of the girls had to come and find us on her motorbike and lead us to the dorm! Apparently, Teuk Thla is on a new street (There is lots of construction going on around us. More on this later on...). So, I got into the dorm about 7:30. There was a gaggle of girls waiting at the gates to greet me and they had me unpack and eat dinner right away.
I already love the girls and their earnest dedication to their studies. The other Leadership Resident with me, Kara, is great and has already been really helpful with understanding what is going on at the dorm and where the girls are at emotionally as she has studied psychology and counseling. They all have different levels of English. Some I can barely communicate with and others want to talk for hours. The thing I am struggling most with right now, besides the jet lag, is trying to remember everyone's name. Not only are they Khmer (pronounced ka-my) names, but there are just so many! I think learning their names will be my goal for the next week since I do not start teaching until the week after next.
More to come!
Becky
